She is known for being the first black woman director/producer of a major film.  She was so passionate about creating an accurate portrayal on film that she traveled to Soweto undercover, posing as a recording artist, to research the riots. She would have needed some resources to direct something at Truman, which she could find pretty easily in this building.

This individual is known for her activism with the NAACP.  She was the first African American woman to win an Oscar. She would have been very interested in studying performing arts.

This man of science was a pioneering African-American biologist, academic and science writer left a legacy for his recognition of the fundamental role of the cell surface in the development of organisms.  He is also a founding member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.  Every student that majors in biology should know who he is.

This African American woman served as an administrator and educator who worked as a civil rights and women’s rights activist.  She was interested in anything dealing with education.

The McNair Program is named after this famous African American physicist who was also one of the first African American NASA astronauts.  He would have spent time in the Adair House on campus.

This African American research chemist and pioneer in chemical synthesis of medicinal drugs from plants was the first to synthesize the natural product physostigmine.  He was also a pioneer in the industrial large-scale chemical synthesis of the human hormones progesterone and testosterone from the plant sterols such as stigmasterol and sitosterol.

If he was a professor at Truman, he probably would have taught in the Chemistry department.

 

Starting Monday, February 12, 2018 the MAC will be hosting a Black History Month Scavenger Hunt. It will continue through to the end of February. It’s super simple to play and a great way to learn, so we hope you’ll participate!

Each school day at 9:00am we will post a new clue on the MAC’s blog. Our most recent blog posts can be found at the bottom of the MAC homepage, or at https://oce.truman.edu/news. These clues will be tied to historical figures or events, and will direct you to buildings and areas around Truman’s campus.

When you find the information related to the day’s clue, take a selfie with it and share it on Instagram or Twitter with @Truman_MAC.  You can also use #TSUBHM. Then, make sure to stop by the MAC to share the answer with one of our staff members. We are located in Baldwin Hall 109.

The first person every day to post their selfie and stop by our office with the correct answer will get a prize. We will also give out a prize at the end of the month for the person with the most right answers, so even if you’re not the first person, make sure to still stop by!
